Fieldpiece SC660 Explained: Wireless Clamp Meter Ratings and Safe Use

The Fieldpiece SC660 is a clamp meter for HVACR work. It reads AC and DC current through a 30 mm jaw, measures AC and DC voltage, and can receive readings wirelessly from Fieldpiece accessory heads and transmitters. Fieldpiece rates it CAT III 600 V. This page covers the figures in Fieldpiece’s operator’s manual and spec sheet, the safety steps the manual asks for, and the points to check before you buy an SC660.

Quick answer

  • The SC660 has a 10,000-count dual display, with AC and DC current up to 400 A through a 1.2 in (30 mm) jaw.
  • Voltage ranges run from 1000 mV to 600 V, and the manual gives a Type K temperature input on two ports.
  • The printed safety rating is CAT III 600 V, class II, pollution degree 2, for indoor use.
  • Wireless range is up to 75 feet line of sight. The manual gives a different frequency band for the US and Europe.

What the SC660 measures

The operator’s manual lists the functions as AC volts, AC amps, DC amps, DC volts, frequency through the clamp, temperature with Type K thermocouples, and phase rotation. Its current ranges are 100 A and 400 A, with a resolution of 0.01 A. The manual gives an accuracy of plus or minus 2.5 percent plus 15 counts for the 100 A range and plus or minus 2.0 percent plus 10 counts for the 400 A range.

For voltage, the ranges are 1000 mV, 10 V, 100 V and 600 V, with a resolution of 0.1 mV. The input impedance is printed as 5 MΩ. The meter also has a high-voltage indicator that the manual lists at above 30 V AC or DC.

The inrush mode is for starting current. The manual says to clamp around the motor’s start wire, then turn the motor on, so the meter can record the starting current. Phase rotation uses two leads to check the order of three-phase lines. The manual lists a voltage range of 80 V to 600 V AC at 50 Hz to 80 Hz for that test.

Wireless function

The SC660 can receive readings from Fieldpiece wireless accessories and transmitters. The manual gives a range of up to 75 feet (23 m) line of sight, with a minimum distance of 1 foot (30 cm). The wireless frequency is printed as 910 MHz to 920 MHz for the US and 868.1 MHz to 868.5 MHz for Europe. If the meter cannot find a linked transmitter within two minutes, the manual says it beeps and stops searching.

Sending readings to the Job Link mobile app requires the Fieldpiece JL2 Job Link transmitter, according to the manual. The manual also includes a compatibility list of Fieldpiece wireless accessories, which you should read before you buy a transmitter or head.

Published ratings and figures

The table uses only figures printed in the three Fieldpiece documents we opened. Where a document does not state a figure, the cell says so.

Safe use before you connect it

The manual asks you to follow all of its instructions to avoid impairing the safety of the product. The points below come from the manual’s specification and quick start sections.

  • Use only test leads that comply with UL 61010-031 and are rated CAT III 600 V or above. The included leads are gold-plated and have removable safety caps.
  • Connect the test leads to the COM and red positive jacks for electrical testing. For temperature, remove the leads, slide the TEMP switch to the right and connect Type K thermocouples.
  • Keep temperature inputs at 30 V or below. The temperature ports are marked 30 V MAX.
  • Operate the meter within 0 to 50 °C and below 70 percent relative humidity, as the operating conditions state.

The manual says CAT III is designated for measurements performed in the building installation. Work on panels, service entrances and other live equipment belongs to a licensed electrician, and a clamp meter rating is not a reason to open live equipment yourself.

What to check before you buy

  • Check the wireless band for your region. The manual prints different frequency bands for the US and Europe.
  • Plan the transmitter purchase. Sending readings to the Job Link app needs the JL2 transmitter, and the compatibility list in the manual names the accessories that work with the meter.
  • Buy the battery separately if needed. The included items list shows the 9 V alkaline battery as not installed, so check the box contents before you power the meter.
  • Match the rating to the circuit. The printed category is CAT III 600 V. Do not plan work above that level with this meter.
  • Check the document version. The three documents we opened are v14 (2016), v11 (2016) and the Spanish v12 (2015). Confirm the current manual on Fieldpiece’s site before you rely on a figure.

How we chose

This explainer covers the SC660 because the model number is a separate search from the other Fieldpiece clamp meters. We opened three Fieldpiece documents on 2026-10-27: the English operator’s manual v14, the Spanish operator’s manual v12, both hosted by Fieldpiece, and the spec sheet v11 hosted as a third-party copy by JJ’s Tech. We used only the figures printed in those documents. We did not use Amazon, retailer pages, Wikipedia or forums for any figure.

What we could not verify

The three documents do not give current pricing, stock levels or a comparison with other clamp meters. They also do not show whether the SC660 is still sold, so check the product page before you buy. The compatibility list of wireless accessories is named in the manual, but we did not check every accessory against your equipment.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Expecting wireless readings without the transmitter. The manual says the meter needs a linked Fieldpiece transmitter to receive wireless readings.
  • Applying more than 30 V to a temperature port, which the meter marks 30 V MAX.
  • Using the wrong wireless band. The manual gives separate frequency bands for the US and Europe.
  • Assuming the 600 V overload figure means the meter is rated for work above the CAT III category.

FAQ

Is the Fieldpiece SC660 a true RMS meter?

The operator’s manual labels the AC voltage function as true RMS and gives a frequency range of 50 to 500 Hz for it. Check the function label on the meter and the manual’s frequency range before you rely on true RMS readings outside that range.

What is the maximum current range?

The manual lists 400 A as the highest range for AC and DC current, with a 100 A range below it. The jaw opening is 1.2 in (30 mm).

Does the SC660 need a separate app to work?

The manual says readings can be sent to the Job Link mobile app through the JL2 transmitter. The meter itself reads and displays measurements without the app.

What does CAT III 600 V mean for this meter?

The manual prints CAT III 600 V and says CAT III is designated for measurements in the building installation. It also gives 600 V DC or 600 V AC rms as the overload protection level for most inputs, unless the manual states otherwise.

How long does the battery last?

The manual gives about 100 hours typical with alkaline batteries, and it lists an automatic power-off of about 30 minutes. The battery is listed as not installed in the included items, so install it before first use.

Bottom line

The Fieldpiece SC660 is a wireless clamp meter rated CAT III 600 V, with 400 A current ranges and a 30 mm jaw. Before you buy, check the wireless band for your region, the transmitter you need, and the rating for the circuit you plan to work on.
