Best Non-Contact Voltage Detector: 10 Pens Compared
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Details
A voltage detector pen tells you whether AC voltage is present near a wire or outlet, and the listing states the lowest voltage it will alarm on and the highest it covers. Those two numbers, plus the safety rating, are what separate the pens in this group. The brand named in the search does not appear among the listings we checked, so this post compares six voltage detector pens from the set. Research figures were checked on 11 October 2026, and the newer pens on 18 October 2026.
Quick answer: for the lowest floor on a pen with two settings, the focemta kit and the X-XIANQI two-pack both list 12V on their high setting. For a single 50V to 1000V pen with an always-on design, look at the Santronics 3000. For a dual-range pen with a 600V top, the Southwire 40126N is the one to compare.

How we chose these six
We kept pens whose listing states a detection range and a rating, and we chose a spread of floors and tops so that the set shows the differences clearly. Three of the six are newer listings, and the other three are research items: the Santronics, the Southwire and the Sperry. To keep the picks distinct from the other pens on this site, we set aside the Neoteck, VENLAB, MXCOIRTP, Klein and zangang pens. The DMwespe two-pack repeats the MXCOIRTP wording, the Zoyi DB02 repeats the dual range of the focemta and X-XIANQI, and the Westinghouse pen gives a title range and a bullet range that do not agree.
- Range: the detection range the listing states, with conflicts shown side by side.
- Settings: whether the pen has one range or a choice of two.
- Rating: the CAT or safety mark in the specs field or bullets, as written.

Worked example: which pens cover a 30 volt AC source?
Take a source that reads 30V AC. The focemta high setting starts at 12V, so it covers 30V. The focemta low setting starts at 48V, so it does not. The X-XIANQI high setting also covers 30V, and its low setting does not. The Southwire 24V to 600V range covers 30V. The Santronics starts at 50V, the Weikani at 60V, and the Sperry title and bullet both start at 50V, so none of those three covers 30V.
Now take a 700 volt AC source. The Southwire tops out at 600V, so it does not cover 700V. The Santronics and the Weikani both reach 1000V, so both cover 700V. The Sperry title covers 700V, but its bullet stops at 600V. For that one source, the Sperry listing does not give a single answer, so check the figure on the box before you use it.
These examples use only the floors and tops the listings state. They do not show how each pen responds near its floor, and the listings do not compare them side by side.
What the listings do not say
None of the listings reports an independent test of its detection range or its rating. The Santronics listing describes its sensitivity without a test figure, and the Sperry listing gives two different top figures. The Southwire listing gives a dual range in its title but no second range figure in the bullets. The focemta and X-XIANQI listings both start their low setting at 48V, and neither gives a lower figure for it. Check the range, the rating and the warranty on the package before you buy.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a pen with a dual range?
A dual range lets you choose a lower floor for thin or low-voltage wiring, such as thermostat or doorbell lines. The focemta and X-XIANQI listings both give a 12V high setting and a 48V low setting. A single-range pen such as the Weikani, which starts at 60V, will not alarm on a low source at all.
Which pen has the highest listed top?
The Santronics, the focemta, the X-XIANQI and the Weikani all list a top of 1000V AC. The Southwire lists 600V, and the Sperry title lists 1000V while one bullet lists 600V.
Is the GFCI tester in the kits a voltage pen?
No. The focemta listing says its GFCI tester works by direct plug-in, not by non-contact detection, and the Sperry listing describes its GFCI tester on the other end. Use the GFCI tester for outlet wiring checks, and use the pen for non-contact voltage.
How long do these pens stay on?
The X-XIANQI listing gives an automatic power-off after 3 minutes without operation or a detected signal. The Santronics has no on or off switch, and the other listings in this post do not give an auto-off time in the fields we read.
Can a voltage pen confirm a circuit is dead?
No listing in this set says a pen confirms that a circuit is dead. Use the pen as a first check, and confirm with a separate tester before you work on a circuit.
Conclusion
For the lowest floor on a two-setting pen, the focemta kit and the X-XIANQI two-pack both list 12V on the high setting, and the X-XIANQI adds the 48V low setting for thermostat and doorbell wires. For a single 50V to 1000V pen, the Santronics 3000 is the one to look at. For a dual-range pen with a 600V top, the Southwire 40126N fits. Compare each listed range with the source you test, and read the rating on the pen itself.
