Laser Measuring Device

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Details

The person typing “laser measuring device” wants a handheld tool that shoots a laser at a wall and reads the distance, so one person can measure a room, a hallway or a ceiling height without a tape. Sellers also call the same tool a laser tape measure or a laser distance measurer. We kept seven listings from Bosch, Klein Tools, DeWalt, Leica and Huepar. Every figure is from the Amazon listings we opened on 2026-10-17, or from the university safety page cited in the safety section. Where two numbers in a listing disagree, we show both and do not pick one.

Quick answer

For a plain 100-foot tool with a stated accuracy, the Klein Tools 93LDM100C is the best-described pocket model: 2 inches to 100 feet, within 1/16 inch for the first 30 feet. If you want area and volume modes at 165 feet, the Bosch GLM165-40 states them. If you want a green beam and a rechargeable battery, the Klein Tools 93LDM200 states both. The DeWalt, Leica and Huepar listings add Bluetooth. None of the listings publishes an independent accuracy test.

What “laser tape measure” and “laser distance measurer” mean here

All seven products are handheld distance meters. You hold the body against a starting point, aim the laser at the far surface and read the distance on a small screen. The listings use different words for the same job: laser measure, laser distance meter, laser measuring tool, digital tape measure with laser. Three of the seven also list calculation modes such as area, volume or indirect measurement, which are useful when you cannot reach the target.

How we chose

We searched Amazon for “laser measuring device” and kept listings that name a brand and model, state a measuring range, and say what laser class or accuracy they have. We dropped a Stabila LD 220 listing because it states no accuracy figure and shows an implausible 0.01 ounce weight, and we left out the many unbranded listings. The criteria were:

  • A stated maximum range in feet or meters.
  • A stated accuracy in inches, or a clear note that the listing does not give one.
  • A stated laser class, so the safety note below can be matched to each tool.
  • Power, protection rating and warranty where the listing gives them.

What the listings do not state: none gives the test conditions behind its accuracy figure, such as target surface or lighting. Listing figures describe a best case, so read them as the maker’s claim.

6. Leica DISTO D1: best for a named app and a stated 2 mm accuracy

Pros: It names a phone app and states accuracy in both inches and millimeters. Cons: The listing conflicts with itself on range: the title says 120 ft and a bullet says a maximum working range of 130 feet (40 m). Those are two different distances, and the listing does not explain why.

Best for: sketching a floor plan on your phone from short-range measurements. Skip if: you need a range figure you can rely on without checking the manual.

Pros: The listing has the most modes, a tripod mount, and the longest stated warranty here. Cons: The listing gives three range figures: 200 ft in the title, 196 ft in the included components, and 10-45 meters in the range field. 45 meters is about 148 feet by our conversion, well under 200 ft. We do not know which is right.

Which one fits the job

  • Small tool for rooms up to 100 feet, with accuracy stated by distance: Klein Tools 93LDM100C.
  • 165 feet, area and volume, stored readings: Bosch GLM165-40.
  • Green beam and rechargeable battery: Klein Tools 93LDM200.
  • Bluetooth app and floor-plan sketching: Leica DISTO D1, Huepar S60-G-BT or DeWalt DW099S.
  • Basic indoor tool: Bosch GLM100-23.

Worked example: you want the floor area of a room that measures 14 ft by 12 ft. That is 14 x 12 = 168 square feet. Each reading is stated to within 1/16 inch on the Bosch GLM165-40, which is 1/16 / 12 = about 0.0052 feet. If both readings were off by that much in the same direction, the area would be off by about (14 x 0.0052) + (12 x 0.0052) = 0.135 square feet, roughly 0.14 square feet out of 168. Now take a 45-foot warehouse aisle on the Klein 93LDM100C: its listing states 1/8 inch beyond 30 feet, so the reading is within 1/8 inch (0.125 in.) by the maker’s claim. These are best-case figures from the listings, not test results.

Laser safety

Six of the seven listings state a Class 2 or Class II laser of 1 mW or less (the Bosch GLM165-40 listing does not state a class). A university safety page on laser pointers, UW-Madison Environment, Health & Safety, says the blink reflex is effective enough to protect the eye from any potential laser damage for lasers under 5 mW, and gives two rules: never look directly into the laser beam, and do not aim the laser at reflective or mirror-like surfaces. That page is about laser pointers, not measuring tools, so we apply it only as a general habit. Follow your tool’s manual, and keep children and pets out of the beam path.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Measuring to a mirror, window or shiny metal. The laser safety page says not to aim a laser at reflective surfaces.
  • Trusting a range you cannot confirm. The Leica and Huepar listings give more than one maximum figure.
  • Buying for accuracy without reading the distance band. The Klein listings give 1/16 inch only for the first 30 or 33 feet.
  • Using the Bosch GLM100-23 in wet or dusty places when its own listing says it is not water resistant.
  • Forgetting where the tool measures from. Some listings mention reference points (the Huepar lists front, middle and rear). Check the manual for your model.

Who should skip buying

  • Anyone who needs a certified measurement for a permit or a contract. The listings state maker claims, not calibration certificates.
  • Anyone who measures mostly short distances, where a standard tape is enough.
  • Anyone who needs a DeWalt DW099S accuracy figure. The listing does not give one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a laser tape measure and a laser distance measurer?

In these listings they are the same type of tool. The products are described as a laser measure, laser distance meter, laser measuring tool or digital tape measure with laser. All seven measure distance with a laser and show it on a screen.

How accurate are laser measures?

The listings claim about 1/16 inch (Bosch GLM100-23, Bosch GLM165-40, Leica DISTO D1, Huepar S60-G-BT). Klein states 1/16 inch for the first 30 feet (93LDM100C) or 33 feet (93LDM200) and 1/8 inch beyond that. The DeWalt DW099S listing states no accuracy. These are the makers’ claims, not test results.

Is a green laser better than a red one?

The Klein 93LDM200 listing says its green beam is twice as visible as standard red lasers, and the Huepar listing says its green beam is 4X brighter than standard red lasers. Both are maker claims. The Bosch GLM100-23 listing states 635 nm and the DeWalt listing states 620 to 690 nm; neither listing mentions a green beam.

Do I need Bluetooth on a laser measure?

No tool needs it to measure. The DeWalt DW099S, Leica DISTO D1 and Huepar S60-G-BT list Bluetooth for phone use; the Leica listing names the free DISTO Sketch app, and the Huepar listing describes an app with remote measuring.

Are laser measures safe for eyes?

Six listings state a Class 2 or Class II laser of 1 mW or less. A UW-Madison safety page says the blink reflex protects the eye for lasers under 5 mW, and still says never to look directly into the beam or aim at reflective surfaces. Follow your tool manual.
