An inverter remote panel is an optional control unit that connects to the remote connector on a Victron Inverter Smart and switches the inverter on or off from a separate location. Victron calls it the Inverter Control VE.Direct panel in its manual. It is not required for the inverter to work. The inverter can also be switched by its own front push button, by the VictronConnect app over Bluetooth, or by a simple switch wired to the same connector. This post explains how the remote panel fits in, and how it differs from the LEDs on the inverter.

Quick answer

  • A remote panel is an optional switch-type control that wires to the inverter’s remote connector, which has two terminals labelled H and L.
  • The inverter switches on when the H and L terminals are bridged, which a switch, a wire bridge or the panel can do.
  • The panel is polarity dependent. The Victron manual says so directly, so check the orientation before you power the unit.
  • Removing the remote connector turns the inverter fully off, which is the manual’s stated method for cutting off the unit.
  • The inverter’s own LED panel shows the state and alarms. The VictronConnect app shows more values, such as battery voltage and AC load.

What the remote connector does

The remote connector is a small plug on the Inverter Smart with two terminals. The manual labels them H and L. The installation page says the inverter switches on when it is set to ON or ECO and when H and L are in contact. Contact can come from a wire bridge, a switch, or the Inverter control panel. Battery positive can also be connected to H, and battery negative to L, to make the same contact. The manual gives these as separate ways of making the connection, not as a sequence.

This is a useful design point. The connector is a permission signal. The inverter does not need the remote panel to run, but when the connector is in the open position the inverter will not switch on from the front button or the app. The installation page calls this a remote on/off function and says a simple on/off switch can do it. That makes the remote panel one of several ways to provide the same signal.

Ways the inverter can be switched on or off

The Victron pages list several control points. Each one is a different way to permit or stop the unit, and they do not all behave the same way.

  • The front push button. A short press switches the inverter between ON, ECO and OFF. The operation page says that in the ON position the product is fully functional, and that the inverter goes into a sleep mode with minimal current when turned off with the button.
  • The VictronConnect app. The general description says the inverter can be turned on or off through the app, over Bluetooth or a wired VE.Direct link, and that ECO mode can be selected in the app too.
  • A remote switch or remote panel. The Inverter Smart supports a simple external switch on the remote connector, and it also supports the Inverter Control VE.Direct panel.
  • A battery management system. The installation page says a lithium battery’s BMS can control the inverter through the same connector.
  • A vehicle ignition. The installation page gives an example in which the inverter runs only while the engine runs, using the vehicle ignition switch on the H terminal.

The operation page also notes that when the inverter is switched off through Bluetooth or the push button, it cannot be switched back on through the wired VE.Direct port. Keep that in mind if you rely on the wired port for monitoring while the unit is off.

The Inverter Control VE.Direct panel

The installation page describes the panel as one option for the remote connector. The page says that if the panel is used, it needs to be connected to the inverter’s remote connector as shown in its diagram. It also says that the connection is polarity dependent for proper operation. That is the only electrical orientation rule the page gives for the panel, so read the diagram against the H and L labels before you connect it.

The operation page lists the same panel in its overview of connection options, next to the remote switch and the GX device with the VRM portal. The pages describe the panel as optional. They do not state its price, its cable length, its enclosure rating or whether it shows any readings of its own, so treat those points as unknown in this post.

Safe installation and the remote connector

The installation page says that during installation the remote connector with its wire bridge must be removed, or the remote on/off switch must be switched off if one is fitted. The reason given is to make sure the inverter cannot switch on unexpectedly while you work. This is the first step to follow when wiring a remote panel, before any battery cable is connected.

The page also gives a safety method. Removing the remote connector from its socket turns the inverter completely off. The manual says this also stops it from being switched on by its switch, push button or Bluetooth. That is the most reliable way to make sure no one restarts the unit while work is under way, and it is more certain than leaving a remote switch in the off position.

Two more points from the same pages matter in practice. First, the battery connection must be made with care. The installation page says to use an insulated box spanner so the battery is not shorted, and gives a maximum torque of 11 Nm for the battery terminals. Second, reverse polarity on the battery connection will damage the inverter, so connect the red cable to positive and the black cable to negative.

The LED panel on the inverter

People searching for an inverter display panel often mean the lights on the front of the unit, so it helps to separate them from the remote panel. The Inverter Smart has its own LED panel, and the general description says the inverter indicates basic operational information and alarms through those LEDs. The operation page describes the panel in more detail, with a table of LED behaviours and what each one means. The main lights named in the operation table are the green inverter LED, the yellow ECO LED and the red alarm LED.

The general description lists the conditions the LEDs report. They include inverter state, overload warning or alarm, over-temperature warning or alarm, low battery voltage warning or alarm, and high DC ripple warning or alarm. The page’s troubleshooting table then links each LED pattern to a cause and a suggested check, and many of those checks point back to the battery connection and the cables. The table’s entries are the authoritative description, so use the table rather than a general guess about what a pattern means.

The LED panel and the remote panel do different jobs. The LEDs tell you what the inverter is doing and why it may have stopped. The remote panel controls whether the inverter is permitted to run. An LED panel on the unit does not replace a remote panel, and a remote panel does not replace the LEDs.

What the VictronConnect app adds

The general description says more parameters can be monitored through VictronConnect. The list includes inverter state, battery voltage, AC output voltage, AC load, relay state, and warnings and alarms. The app connects over Bluetooth or through a VE.Direct to USB interface. A GX device can also show the data, and the general description names a GX device with the VRM portal as an option for remote monitoring.

If you want a readout that the LEDs cannot give, such as the battery voltage at the inverter, the app is the source the Victron pages name. The pages do not describe any separate display unit for the Inverter Smart.

ECO mode and standby behaviour

A remote panel does not change how the inverter behaves once it is permitted to run. ECO mode does. The operation page says that in ECO mode the inverter reduces its power use while idle. It switches off automatically when no load is detected, then switches on briefly about every three seconds to check for a load. If the output power rises above the set level, it keeps running. ECO mode can be set through the app or the front button.

This matters for a remote panel user because the panel’s ON state is a permission, not a guarantee of output. A unit in ECO mode may appear idle until a load turns on. The operation page’s ECO description is the reference for that behaviour.

How we chose these sources

We used four Victron Energy pages from the Inverter Smart manual. The installation page covers the remote connector, the control panel connection and the installation warnings. The operation page covers the switch positions, the LED panel and the ECO behaviour. The general description covers the remote on/off methods, the LED summary and the app monitoring list. The technical specifications page shows that the Inverter Smart has a remote on/off connector and a Bluetooth link. Each page carries a copyright year of 2025 and no revision date, so the source date in this post is that year. We opened all four on 2026-10-27.

What we could not verify

  • The pages give no price, cable length, enclosure rating or mounting dimensions for the Inverter Control VE.Direct panel.
  • The pages do not say what the panel displays, if anything, beyond its on and off function.
  • The pages do not list any other remote panel, and they do not say which panels are compatible apart from the Victron panel named.
  • The pages do not state the wire gauge or the maximum length for the remote connector wiring.
  • The pages describe the Inverter Smart only. They do not describe other inverter models or other brands.
  • The pages do not explain the reason for the H and L labelling beyond the connection rules they give.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Connecting the remote panel with the wrong orientation. The manual says the connection is polarity dependent.
  • Working on the battery connection while the remote connector is still in place. The installation page says to remove it first.
  • Assuming the remote panel shows battery voltage. The pages assign that information to the app and to the LEDs.
  • Expecting the inverter to run from a remote panel alone. The unit still needs a battery and correct DC cabling.
  • Relying on the wired VE.Direct port to switch the unit back on after it has been turned off by Bluetooth or the push button.
  • Reading ECO standby as a fault. The operation page describes it as normal behaviour.

FAQ

Is a remote panel required for an Inverter Smart?

No. The unit can be switched by its push button and the VictronConnect app. The remote panel and remote switch are optional ways to permit or stop the unit from another location.

What is the difference between a remote panel and the LEDs?

Put simply, the remote panel is for permission and the LEDs are for status. The LEDs show the state and any warnings or alarms, and the two do different jobs.

Can a remote switch do the same job as the panel?

The installation page says a simple on/off switch connected to the remote connector can provide remote on/off control. The panel is the Victron option named in the pages.

What happens if I remove the remote connector?

The installation page says the inverter is turned off completely and cannot be switched on by its switch, push button or Bluetooth until the connector is put back.

Does a BMS work with the remote connector?

The installation page says that a lithium battery’s BMS can control the inverter through the remote connector. The page does not name a specific BMS.

Bottom line

A remote panel is a permission switch on the remote connector, not a display and not a power source. Wire it with the H and L polarity in mind, remove the connector before any battery work, and use the LEDs and the VictronConnect app to see what the inverter is doing.
