What Is a Low Battery Shutdown?
A low battery shutdown is a protection that switches an inverter off when the battery voltage falls below a set level. Its purpose is to stop the inverter from drawing the battery down to a voltage that could damage it. For the Victron Energy SUN Inverter, the manual sets this as a configurable low battery shutdown level, with defaults for 12 V and 24 V systems, and it sets a separate, higher restart level so the inverter does not switch on and off repeatedly. This page explains each level and the sequence the manual describes.
Quick answer
- A low battery shutdown switches the inverter off when the battery voltage drops below the shutdown level.
- The SUN Inverter manual lists a default shutdown of 9.3 V for 12 V systems and 18.6 V for 24 V systems.
- The inverter restarts when the battery voltage rises above the restart and alarm level: 10.9 V for 12 V and 21.8 V for 24 V, by default.
- The charge-detect level, 14 V for 12 V and 28 V for 24 V by default, is where the low battery alarm is cleared once charging is detected.
Why the inverter shuts down
A battery’s voltage falls as it discharges. An inverter draws energy from the battery to supply its loads, so the more the battery is used, the lower its voltage falls. A battery run too low can be damaged, and the inverter’s electronics can behave unpredictably as the input voltage drops. The low battery shutdown stops the inverter before that point, so the battery keeps some reserve and the inverter stays within its operating range.
It is a protection, not a fault. The inverter has done what it was set to do. The useful question is why the battery reached the shutdown level, and whether the loads, the charging or the battery itself needs attention.
The three voltage levels
The configuration section of the SUN Inverter manual lists three levels for low battery behaviour. The manual gives defaults for both 12 V and 24 V systems:
| Level | 12 V default | 24 V default |
|---|---|---|
| Low battery shutdown | 9.3 V | 18.6 V |
| Low battery restart and alarm | 10.9 V | 21.8 V |
| Charge detect | 14 V | 28 V |
These values come from section 4.3 of the manual. They are defaults, so the values set on a given unit may be different. Check the settings on the unit itself before you assume these figures apply.
The sequence, step by step
- Discharge. The battery voltage falls as the inverter supplies its loads.
- Shutdown. When the voltage drops below the shutdown level, the inverter switches off. The manual states that the inverter will shut down when the DC input voltage drops below the low battery shutdown parameter.
- Wait. The battery can recover, for example when the load is removed or charging begins.
- Restart. The inverter restarts once the battery voltage has increased above the restart and alarm level. The manual states this restart behaviour in the same section.
- Charge detect. When the inverter detects that the battery is being charged, it clears the low battery alarm.
The gap between the shutdown level, 9.3 V for 12 V systems by default, and the restart level, 10.9 V, is the reason the inverter does not cycle rapidly. Without a gap, a battery sitting at the shutdown level would switch the inverter on and off many times in a row.
The manual’s note on restarting
The operation section of the manual, in its section on low battery voltage, says that to restart the inverter, you switch it off and then on again. Read this together with the restart level above. Where the battery voltage has risen above the restart level, the inverter can restart by itself. Where the protection has been triggered and the battery has not recovered, the manual’s advice is to switch the unit off and on. Do not keep switching it on while the battery is still low. Give the battery time to charge first.
Dynamic cut-off
The configuration section also describes dynamic cut-off. In the manual’s words, it makes the low battery shutdown protection a function of the battery current drawn from the battery. The shutdown then depends on how hard the inverter is working, not only on the battery voltage. The manual states that this feature is disabled by default. If it is enabled on your unit, a heavy load may trigger shutdown at a higher voltage than the default level, so check the setting before you assume the defaults apply.
What causes a low battery shutdown
- A load larger than the battery can support for the time it runs.
- A battery with less usable capacity than expected, for example an aged battery.
- No charging source, or a charging source that is not reaching the battery.
- A cable or connection with high resistance, which lets the voltage at the inverter drop under load.
The manual does not give a diagnosis for these causes. Each is a common reason a battery’s voltage falls under load. Check them in that order, starting with the battery and its connections.
What to check if it keeps happening
- Measure the battery voltage with the load off and then under load. A meter with a DC voltage range is enough for this check.
- Check that the battery cables are secure and of sufficient cross section, as the installation section of the manual requires.
- Confirm the charging source is connected and working.
- Reduce the load, or run the heavy loads only when the battery is charged.
- Do not change the shutdown level just to keep the inverter running. A lower shutdown level leaves less reserve in the battery.
How we chose
The levels and sequence on this page come from the configuration and operation sections of the SUN Inverter manual, and the rating figures come from its technical specifications section. We opened the three pages on 2026-10-27 from the HTML5 edition, © 2022. We did not add voltage levels from any other source.
What we could not verify
- The defaults are for 12 V and 24 V. The sources we opened do not give the levels for a 48 V system in the sections quoted here.
- The pages show no revision number, so the values are as published on the pages on the date opened.
- The manual does not state a voltage for every battery chemistry. A battery’s voltage under load depends on its chemistry and state of charge.
- The pages do not explain the battery’s own protection, so we do not describe it.
Mistakes to avoid
- Treating the default voltages as the values on your unit.
- Lowering the shutdown level to avoid shutdowns, which leaves the battery with less reserve.
- Switching the inverter on and off repeatedly while the battery is still low.
- Assuming a low battery shutdown is a fault in the inverter, when it usually points to the battery, the load or the charging.
FAQ
What voltage does a 12 V SUN Inverter shut down at by default?
The manual lists 9.3 V as the default low battery shutdown level for 12 V systems, with a restart level of 10.9 V.
What voltage does a 24 V system shut down at by default?
The manual lists 18.6 V as the default shutdown level for 24 V systems, with a restart level of 21.8 V.
Why is the restart level higher than the shutdown level?
The gap gives the battery time to recover before the inverter switches back on, which prevents rapid on-and-off cycling.
What is the charge-detect level for?
The manual uses it to clear the low battery alarm once the inverter detects charging. The defaults are 14 V for 12 V and 28 V for 24 V.
Can I stop the low battery shutdown from happening?
You can change the levels in the configuration, but lowering them leaves less reserve in the battery. The better fix is usually to reduce the load, check the connections, or restore charging.
Bottom line
A low battery shutdown switches the inverter off to protect the battery, and the restart level brings it back once the battery has recovered. Know the levels for your model, and treat a repeated shutdown as a sign that the load, the battery or the charging needs attention.
